~WELCOME~
Welcome to The Wellness of it All!
A blog about health, wellness, weight loss, yoga, fitness, clean foods, supplements, essential oils, homemade remedies, amateur herbalist and reiki, just to name a few!
My name is Allana, I am a essential oil junkie, a yoga student, a reiki practitioner, a mom,a dog mom, a wife, a homemaker, a student of life and attempting to balance it all, just like everyone else.
A number of years ago I decided that after having somewhat successful bariatric surgery I wanted to really get healthy, so I started doing Crossfit. (please don’t stop reading!) At the same time as I was doing Crossfit I also decided to undertake a 200-hour Yoga teacher training program. While going through this program and doing Crossfit, I injured my knee doing weighted back squats. I spent a fair amount of time in physical therapy and on pain medications. I very quickly got sick of having to take pills. At the time my husband and I were trying to have a baby. Its just not a good idea to be taking opioids while trying to conceive, which is what numerous doctors told me. So I started researching natural remedies; remedies that would not inhibit my plan to get pregnant. I started with essential oils and creating balms and lotions and rollers to help ease the pain in my knee without drugs. I am not anti-pharmaceuticals in anyway, sometimes, pharmaceuticals are the difference between life and death. However, my life was not on the line, I just needed an alternative to taking pain medications.
When changing my diet and going to physical therapy and cortisone shots did not help my knee, I had surgery, it turns out that no amount of anything done would have helped my issue. I had an overabundance of synovial fluid; so every time I worked out, practiced yoga or just did anything more than walking to the bathroom, my knee would swell and cause pain. My orthopedic surgeon went in cleaned out all the excess fluid and lo and behold… so much less pain, almost immediately! Obviously I felt the effects of the surgery, even though it was done with a scope, but that was way better than having a huge scar running down straight over my kneecap.
I continued researching all the things that essential oils and herbs can do to help heal the body, inside and out. It was so enlightening. I was like sitting in a dark room and having a light turned on. I began purchasing items like beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, coco butter, and sweet almond oil to make my own remedies. Through a lot of experimentation I found recipes that helped some of my most common ailments.
My traditional educational background is in Jurisprudence and writing and conflict management, part of my brain loves that very logical and analytical aspects, but the other part loves the creativity of working with items that come from nature. The idea that one can take natural things in a less processed or pure form and use them to help alleviate pain or illness or an annoyance, like the itch fro a bug bite is just amazing to me. Don’t get me wrong in the last 6 years I have logged hundreds of hours doing research on plants, flowers, herbs and roots and the processes that take them from their undisturbed form into something that can be used more easily. Basically, companies like DoTerra source all the natural ingredients from farms all over the world, they then distill them using the method that will yield the best results. The essential oils that are produced by DoTerra are therapeutic and food grade, meaning all can be used externally with the right dilution and some can be taken internally.
After a lot of thought, this is what I always came back to, health, wellness and self-care. I have spent so much of my life battling my weight and a myriad of illness and injury. Once I found a more natural way to live, I began to feel so much better.
On this blog I will share all the things I have learned in my search for health, wellness and my goal weight, as well as recipes on how you can make remedies at home too.
I hope you will come with me on this journey! Thanks for reading !
